From a nasalised variant of Arabic الإجّاص (al-ʔijjāṣ), from إجّاص (ʔijjāṣ) with fused definite article اَل (al-). Compare Algerian Arabic لنجاص (lanjāṣ), Moroccan Arabic لنجاص (langāṣ) or نجاص (ngāṣ), and South Levantine Arabic إنجاص (injāṣ).
