From Proto-Finnic *kaiho (harm, damage, loss), from Proto-Uralic *kajša-w (sickness).[1] Cognate with Estonian kahju, Ingrian kaiho, Karelian kaiho, Livonian ka’i, Võro kaih and Votic kaiho.
