German
Etymology
From Middle High German gedenken, from Old High German gidenken. By surface analysis, ge- + denken.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ɡəˈdɛŋkŋ̩/, /ɡəˈdɛŋkən/
Verb
gedenken (irregular weak, third-person singular present gedenkt, past tense gedachte, past participle gedacht, past subjunctive gedächte, auxiliary haben)
- to remember, commemorate
- An diesem Tag gedenken wir der Opfer.
- On this day we remember the victims.
- to intend
- Wann gedenkst du, heute Abend nach Hause zu kommen?
- When do you intend to come home this evening?
Usage notes
In the formal standard language, this verb (in the first sense) is mostly construed with a genitive object as above (wir gedenken der Opfer). However, a dative object is sometimes encountered, particularly in less formal contexts (wir gedenken den Opfern). To preserve the object after nominalisation (das Gedenken), the preposition an intervenes (in stillem Gedenken an die Opfer), echoing the fixed construction denken an ("to think of/about"). Analogous use of the verb gedenken (wir gedenken an die Opfer) is not unheard-of, but usually considered an instance of hypercorrection.
