French

Etymology

Inherited from Middle French departir, from Old French departir, from Late Latin departīre, from Latin de + partiō. Or from dé- + partir.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /de.paʁ.tiʁ/
  • (file)

Verb

départir

  1. (reflexive, se départir de) to divest, dispose of
  2. (transitive, obsolete) to distribute
  3. (Louisiana, reflexive) to depart, to leave

Conjugation

This is one of a fairly large group of irregular -ir verbs that are all conjugated the same way. Other members of this group include sortir and dormir. The most significant difference between these verbs' conjugation and that of the regular -ir verbs is that these verbs' conjugation does not use the infix -iss-. Further, this conjugation has the forms (je, tu) dépars and (il) départ in the present indicative and imperative, whereas a regular -ir verb would have *départis and *départit (as in the past historic).

Descendants

  • Portuguese: departir
