From Ottoman Turkish بللی (belli), from earlier بللو (bellü, “known, perceptible, certain”), from Proto-Turkic *bẹlgü-lig (“manifest”), from Proto-Turkic *bẹlgü (“sign”), a derivation of Proto-Turkic *bẹl- (“to denote, to designate”).[1] Cognates include Azerbaijani bəlli, Karakhanid بَلْكُلُكْ (belgülüg, “manifest”), Chuvash паллӑ (pallă, “sign, label, mark, estimate”), Yakut бэлиэ (belie, “sign, symbol”).
