Etymology
From Proto-Turkic *bẹlgü, a derivation of Proto-Turkic *bel- (“to denote, to designate”).[1] Cognates include Turkish belli, Kumyk белги (belgi), Chuvash паллӑ (pallă, “sign, label, mark, estimate”). Possibly related to Proto-Turkic *bil- (“to know”).
