From Middle Irish aithnech (“wise, knowing”), from Old Irish aithgne (“act of knowing, recognising, perceiving; knowledge, recognition, perception”), verbal noun of ad·gnin (“know, recognize; perceive, be aware of, understand”); synchronically, aithne (“recognition; act of recognizing”) or aithin (“know, recognize, identify”) + -ach.
