From *spě̀ti (advance, ripen, hurry) + *-xъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *spḗˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *spéh₁- (root present), from *speh₁- (succeed, prosper). Cognate with Lithuanian spė̃kas (power), Latvian spȩ̀ks (power).
