From Middle High German engerlinc, from Old High German engiring (10th c.), diminutive of angar ‘large larva’ (compare modern dialectal Anger, Inger), from Proto-Germanic *angaraz, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂engʷʰ-ir- (compare Lithuanian ungurỹs ‘eel’, ánkštara, inkstìras ‘pimple; tapeworm’, Albanian thnegël ‘ant’). Compare also Unke, ultimately from a variant of the same Indo-European root.

- Here the warbles appear, approximately six months after the swarming of the adult, thus in January until the Spring. The swellings reach the size of a walnut and upon maturity exhibit a small opening at the side, from which a sticky fluid emerges. In these swellings reside the larvae, known to the country folk as "grubs".
