Etymology
From Middle High German birke, from Old High German birka, bircha, from Proto-West Germanic *birkijā.
The Old High German variant birihha shows a svarabhakti vowel; if continued it would have led to modern *Birche (compare Kirche). Cognate to Dutch berk, Low German Bark, English birch, Swedish björk.
