First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 틀이〮다〮 (Yale: thùlGí-tá). From 틀— (teul-, “to turn, twist, wrench”) + —이— (-i-, passive suffix) + —다 (-da, verb ending).
