Earliest attested in a speech by King Wuling of Zhao recorded in Stratagems of the Warring States, :

胡服騎射百姓寡人 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
胡服骑射百姓寡人 [Classical Chinese, simp.]
Jīn wú jiāng húfúqíshè yǐ jiào bǎixìng, ér shì bì yì guǎrén yǐ. [Pinyin]
Now I intend to instruct the hundred clans to adopt the clothes of the Hu in order to practice mounted archery, but this will certainly make [me] the subject of gossip throughout the world."
