Etymology

Perhaps transcription of a foreign term; compare Tibetan ལང་ཐང་རྩེ (lang thang rtse, Hyoscyamus niger).

In what is possibly a folk etymology, herbalist Li Shizhen explained the name as:

[Literary Chinese, trad. and simp.]
From: The Compendium of Materia Medica [Bencao Gangmu], by Li Shizhen, 1578 CE
Qí zǐ fú zhī, lìng rén kuángláng fàngdàng, gù míng. [Pinyin]
Its seeds, when ingested, will make one deranged (kuanglang) and unrestrained (fangdang), hence the name.
