Etymology
Calque of Dutch waterstof (literally “waterstuff”), equivalent to 水 (sui, “water”) + 素 (so, “element”). Compare German Wasserstoff, Luxembourgish Waasserstoff. Coined by Japanese scientist Udagawa Yōan in 1834 in his book 遠西医方名物考補遺 (“水素”).
