Etymology
From たり (tari, “to be”, archaic) + 活用 (katsuyō, “declension, inflection”).
The classical verb tari itself is a contraction of particle と (to) and classical verb あり (ari).

Usage notes
- Adjectives in this class are mostly Sino-Japanese words.
- Monolingual Japanese dictionaries use the label トタル (to taru) to indicate an entry that is a tari katsuyō adjective; to taru being from the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem form”) and 連体形 (rentaikei, “attributive form”) to and taru, respectively.
