Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂yu-gʷih₃- (long life) or Proto-Indo-European *h₁su-gʷih₃- (good life) with -ής (-ḗs, adjective suffix). In the former case cognate to Latin iūgis, Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬈𐬘𐬍 (yauuaejī), Proto-Germanic *aiwukiz.
