From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sáras, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sáras, from late, southern dialectal Proto-Indo-European *sélos ~ *séles (marsh). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἕλος (hélos, marsh-meadow), Old Armenian եղտիւր (ełtiwr, marsh).
