Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *śraddádʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćradᶻdʰádʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱred-dʰédʰoh₁ti (to place one's heart, i.e. "to believing or trust"), compound phrase of the oblique case form of *ḱérd (heart) (whence also हृदय (hṛ́daya)) and *dʰédʰoh₁ti (to place) (whence also दधाति (dádhāti)). Cognate with Latin crēdō, Irish creid (to believe).[1]
