Inherited from Sanskrit फलति (phalati) or from پھل (phal). Cognate with Punjabi ਫਲਣਾ (phalṇā) / پَھلݨا (phalṇā), Sindhi ڦَلَڻُ / फलणु, Gujarati ફળવું (phaḷvũ), Nepali फल्नु (phalnu), Marathi फळणे (phaḷṇe), Bengali ফলা (phola).
