Etymology

From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hcʾl /hazār/) (Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫍𐫉𐫀𐫡 (hzʾr)), from Proto-Iranian *hajáhram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *saȷ́ʰásram, from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-ǵʰéslom.

Indo-Iranian cognates include Pashto زر (zër), Baluchi ہزار (hazár), Central Kurdish ھەزار (hezar), Ossetian ӕрзӕ (ærzæ), and Sanskrit सहस्र (sa-hásra). Akin to Old Armenian հազար (hazar), a Middle Iranian borrowing.
