Etymology

Related to Aramaic ליד‎ (lyd, “under control of, next to”) and Jewish Babylonian Aramaic לידי‎ (lydy, “into one's possession, into a state of, towards”). Developed parallel with لَدُن‎ (ladun), derived from a contraction of لَ‎ (la, “to, for; at”) + يَدَا‎ (yadā, “hand”); at hand. Hence rendering the sense, to be right before them, to be in their presence, immediately at their person, nearly occupying the same location, as close as one can get.
