Arabic

Etymology

Related to Aramaic ליד (lyd, under control of, next to) and Jewish Babylonian Aramaic לידי (lydy, into one's possession, into a state of, towards). Developed parallel with لَدُن (ladun), derived from a contraction of لَ (la, to, for; at) + يَدَا (yadā, hand); at hand. Hence rendering the sense, to be right before them, to be in their presence, immediately at their person, nearly occupying the same location, as close as one can get.
