Etymology
From Arabic طَرَابُلُس الْغَرْب (Ṭarābulus al-Ḡarb, “Tripoli of the West, the western Tripoli”), distinguishing it from طَرَابُلُس الشَّام (Ṭarābulus aš-Šām, “Tripoli of Syria, the Syrian Tripoli”), ultimately from Latin Tripolis and Ancient Greek Τρίπολις (Trípolis), from τρι- (tri-, “tri-: three”) + πόλις (pólis, “city, city-state”) in reference to the ancient towns of Oea, Sabratha, and Leptis Magna.
