Etymology

From Arabic طَرَابُلُس الْغَرْب (Ṭarābulus al-Ḡarb, Tripoli of the West, the western Tripoli), distinguishing it from طَرَابُلُس الشَّام (Ṭarābulus aš-Šām, Tripoli of Syria, the Syrian Tripoli), ultimately from Latin Tripolis and Ancient Greek Τρίπολις (Trípolis), from τρι- (tri-, tri-: three) + πόλις (pólis, city, city-state) in reference to the ancient towns of Oea, Sabratha, and Leptis Magna.
