χολέρα

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • χολέρρη (kholérrhē) Ionic

Etymology

A medical expression. Formally it may be compared with ὑστέρα (hustéra, uterus, womb) and names of diseases like ἴκτερος (íkteros, jaundice) and ὕδερος (húderos, dropsy). Perhaps, this word is a substantivization from unattested *χολερός (*kholerós), with shift of accent. According to Beekes, a basic derivation is more likely from χολή (kholḗ, gall, bile) than from χολάς (kholás, entrails, guts), but a Pre-Greek origin cannot be ruled out. Irish galar (sickness, illness) has to be kept separate.
