Learnedly, from Hellenistic Koine Greek υἱοθετέω (huiothetéō) / υἱοθετῶ (huiothetô). The figurative sense, semantic loan from French adopter.[1] Morphologically, from υιός (yiós, son) (υἱός (huiós)) + θέτω (théto, put, place) (from τίθημι (títhēmi)).
