σκάλοψ
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Traditionally derived from σκάλλω (skállō, “to stir up, hoe”). However, Beekes suggests a Pre-Greek origin in view of the suffix common to other animal names, such as δρύοψ (drúops), κόρνοψ (kórnops), κώνωψ (kṓnōps) and πάρνοψ (párnops).
