passive perfect participle of πεθαίνω (pethaíno, “I die”), a verb without passive forms. Inherited from Byzantine Greek ἀπεθαμένος (apethaménos) from stem ἀπεθαν- with assimilation [nm > mm] and simplification of [mm > m].[1] See Ancient Greek aorist ἀπέθᾰνον (apéthanon) of ἀποθνῄσκω (apothnḗiskō).
