Inherited from Koine Greek Κωνσταντινούπολις (Kōnstantinoúpolis) with suffix -ις (-is) > -η (-i), equivalent to Κωνσταντίνου (Konstantínou, “Constantine's”) + πόλη (póli, “city”).

Unlike in nearly all other languages, Greek speakers still usually call the city Κωνσταντινούπολη (Konstantinoúpoli), or colloquially η Πόλη (i Póli). Ιστάμπουλ (Istámpoul) is much less common.
