Inherited from Ottoman Turkish یومق (yumuḳ, (of eyes, fist etc.) shut, closed),[1] from Ottoman Turkish یوممق (yummaḳ, to shut, to close), from Proto-Turkic *yum- (to close (eyes, mouth)),[2][3] morphologically yum- + -uk.
