Etymology
A derivative of vjet (“last year”), variant of vit, contaminated with Latin vetus, veteris. Compare Lithuanian vẽtušas (“old”, archaic), Old Church Slavonic ветъхъ (vetŭxŭ, “old, ancient”). Attributed directly to Latin veterem by Orel.[1]
