Sino-Vietnamese word from (king; prince), from Middle Chinese . After Qin Shi Huang unified China and became the "first emperor" (in a practical sense that he founded the first Chinese empire, as well as a linguistic sense that he coined the Chinese word for "emperor", 皇帝 (huángdì)), had long been demoted from "king" to "prince" (the emperor's male relative that had land) in East Asia.
