From Proto-Finnic *toci (compare Estonian tõsi), from Proto-Uralic *čoďe (compare Eastern Khanty [script needed] (čăjǝ), Northern Mansi [script needed] (sōĺ)).

- (true): When used predicatively, the adjective is always either in the partitive singular, or somewhat less commonly in the nominative singular:
- Tämä on totta! / Tämä on tosi!
- This is true! / I mean it/business!
- (real, serious): Used as an attribute or as a modifier in a compound term.
- The comparative form is uncommon and the superlative form is rare.
- Outside of more formal and technical language (e.g. in logic), in everyday speech, all other forms than the nominative and partitive singular are uncommon, outside of their use as adverbs:
- näyttää toteen (“to prove”)
- olla totta (“to be true”)
- ottaa todesta (“to take seriously; to take for granted”)
- todella (“really, very”)
- toden teolla (“really”)
- toden tullen (“if push comes to shove, if things really get tough”)
- tosiaan (“indeed, really”)
- tosin (“granted, although, (given that) it is true that”)
