From Middle Dutch toghel, teugel,[1] from Proto-Germanic *tugilaz (rein on a horse),[2] whence also Old Norse tygill, Old English tygel, Old High German zugil (German Zügel). Ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *dewk-.
