From Malay temu, from Classical Malay تمو (tĕmu), from Old Malay [script needed] (tmu), from (Western) Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *təmu (“to meet, receive; greet a guest”), or alternatively from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁mu, *t₁muj, *t₁muəj (“guest, visitor”). Possible doublet of tamu (“guest, visitor”).
