From a Vulgar Latin *experlavāre, from Late Latin perlavāre, from Latin lavāre (“wash”). Compare Aromanian spel, aspel, spilari, Albanian shpëlaj (“to rinse”), German spülen (“to rinse, flush, wash”). [1]
