Compound of sekolah (“school”) + lanjutan (“advanced, continuation”), from calque of Dutch of school voor voortgezet onderwijs: school (“school”) + voor (“for”) + voortgezet onderwijs (“secondary education”, literally “continuing education”), or meer uitgebreid lager onderwijs (MULO): meer (“more”) + uitgebreid (“extensive”) + lager (“low”) + onderwijs (“school”). Replaced by sekolah menengah.
