Borrowed from Old Tupi paranã (“sea”) (Hoff, 1968: 14). Compare also Akawaio paraw, Macushi pîrana, Pemon parana, parau, Yao (South America) parona, as well as (from non-Cariban languages) Lokono bara, Wayampi parana.
