From Javanese ꦥꦤꦶꦠꦿ (panitra, “secretary”), from Old Javanese panitra, prefixed pa- + citra, from Sanskrit चित्र (citrá, “picture”). Equivalent to peng- + citra. Semantic loan from Dutch griffier (“registrar”).
