From Proto-Finnic *paimën, borrowed from a Baltic language (compare Lithuanian piemuo), from Proto-Indo-European *poh₂-i-mn̥ (compare Ancient Greek ποιμήν (poimḗn)), from *peh₂- (“to protect”) (compare Latin pastor). Related to Karelian paimoi.
