Etymology

From the same stem as the verb mukt “to sink (in mud)” (q.v.), with an extra element -l, from Proto-Indo-European *mew-k- (slimy, slippery), see also Ancient Greek μύκης (múkēs, mushroom). Additional cognates include Lithuanian muklùs, Serbo-Croatian mùkljiv.[1]
