Compound of mata (“the important part”) + kuliah (“lecture”) (similar to Indonesian mata pelajaran). Compare to Chinese 科目 (kēmù, “course, subject”, literally “branch of study + eye”) and Japanese 科目 (kamoku, “subject; course”).
