mamaya
Tagalog
Alternative forms
- mimiya — Cavite
Etymology
Possibly from the following:
- Initial reduplication of obsolescent root maya (“after a short period”).
- From mam- + baya (“toleration”), according to Panganiban (1972).
- From Sanskrit समय (samaya) with the first syllable mistaken as the sa- prefix, then reduplication into maya-maya, then inflected as mamaya-maya, then underwent clipping, according to Pardo de Tavera (1887). Compare Javanese ꦱꦼꦩꦪ (semaya, “to postpone; to delay”), Old Javanese samaya, Indonesian semaya.

- (Standard Tagalog) IPA(key): /mamaˈjaʔ/ [mɐ.mɐˈjaʔ], /ˈmamajaʔ/ [ˈma.mɐ.jɐʔ]
