From Old Irish ibid (compare Manx iu), from Proto-Celtic *ɸibeti, from Proto-Indo-European *píph₃eti (compare Latin bibō, Sanskrit पिबति (pibati), Old Church Slavonic пити (piti), Ancient Greek πίνω (pínō)), from *peh₃-.
