hirrë
Albanian
Etymology
Uncertain; possibly:
- from Proto-Albanian *ksirā, cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšiHrám (“milk”),[1] perhaps:
- both borrowed from an Asiatic substrate language,[2]
- or further connected to Proto-West Germanic *hwaij (“whey”), from Proto-Indo-European *tkʷeyH-, *tkʷeHy-,[3][4]
- from Proto-Albanian *skirā, cognate with:
- Old Norse skyr (“thick curdled milk”),[5] possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to cut off”),[6]
- Lithuanian kartùs (“bitter”),[7] Old Prussian kārtai (“bitter”), ultimately of unknown origin,
- or Mantuan Lombard scaron (“whey”), perhaps ultimately borrowed from Messapic *skar- (“whey”),[8]
- or possibly borrowed from Ancient Greek ὁρός (horós, “whey”),[9] cognate with Latin serum (“whey”), Sanskrit सार (sā́ra, “curd, cream”), from Proto-Indo-European *ser- (“to flow”).
