From Proto-Basque *ganbeɫu, borrowed from Vulgar Latin *camellus, from Latin camelus, from Ancient Greek κάμηλος (kámēlos), ultimately from Proto-Semitic *gamal-. Sense two is a semantical borrowing from Spanish camello.
