erven
Dutch
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈɛrvə(n)/
Audio (file) - Hyphenation: er‧ven
- Rhymes: -ɛrvən
Etymology 1
From Middle Dutch erven, from Proto-West Germanic *arbijan, from Proto-Germanic *arbijaną, denominative from *arbiją, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃erbʰ- (“change allegiance or status or ownership”). Equivalent to erf + -en.
Usage notes
- Colloquially, the past tense ierf and the past participle georven are sometimes heard, analogous to the strong conjugation of verb sterven. This is, however, widely considered non-standard.
