From Ottoman Turkish طورمق (durmak), from Proto-Turkic *tur- (to stand). Cognate with Kazakh тұру (tūru), Turkmen durmak, Crimean Tatar turmaq, Uzbek turmoq, Uyghur تۇرماق (turmaq), Azerbaijani durmaq, Tatar turu, Chuvash тӑр (tăr), etc.
