Inherited from Old French (and Middle French) deslier, from Vulgar Latin disligāre (attested in the Reichenau Glossary), from Latin dis- + ligō (“tie, bind”). Compare Occitan desligar, Catalan deslligar, Portuguese desligar, Spanish desliar, Friulian disleâ, Italian slegare, Romanian dezlega.
