From Vulgar Latin *coāglāre, *quāglāre, from syncopation of Latin coāgulāre. Compare French cailler, Portuguese coalhar, Spanish cuajar, Sicilian cuagghiari, Sardinian cazare or cracare. See also the borrowed doublet coagulare.
