Etymology
bur (“burgher”) + brev (“letter”). The word bur was used in the meaning "burgher" or "city inhabitant", but could also mean "villager", "farmer", or "neighbor". From Proto-Germanic *būraz. Related to German Bauer and Dutch boer. See also burskap.
