bevrijden
Dutch
Etymology
From earlier bevrijen, from Middle Dutch bevrien. Equivalent to be- + vrijen. The -d- is a hypercorrection, probably influenced by the past tense bevrijd and/or compensating for a mistakenly supposed case of d-weakening (compare vlieden); contrast vrijen, which has the etymologically expected form without -d-.
